The Illuminator, draws you in from the first pages and you will not be able to put it down. This first novel of former Librarian and English teacher, Brenda Rickman Vantrease, is set in late fourteenth century England. It weaves the historical figures of John Wycliffe, Bishop Henry Despenser, Julian of Norwich and John Ball with fictional characters during a time in feudal England where Church and King had absolute power and where the pleasure or displeasure of a bishop or nobleman could mean life or death. The hero, Finn, is a master illuminator who works not only for the Church, but in secret for John Wycliffe. Wycliff was the first to translate the Bible into the English language. He was charged with heresy and his writings were banned, but he continued to translate and preach. The heroine, Lady Kathryn, mistress of Blackingham Manor is caught between the King’s taxes and the Church’s increasing demands for money. To protect her sons’ inheritance, she agrees to the abbot’s request and takes in the illuminator and his daughter. Friendship, love, betrayals, tragedies and heroism abound. The reader is struck by how dangerous and fragile life was during this period in history, and how blessed we are to read, worship and live in freedom from tyranny. Judy Epperly, library staff
